Taryn the Super Catholic!
Yet, Taryn is IN LOVE with everything religious. She loves going to church. She genuflects when she walks in the church pew. She dips her finger in the holy water and attempts the sign of the cross. She attempts to say the Lord's Prayer (and gets about 1/4 of the words right!) and has been asking for a crucifix necklace for her 3rd birthday. She loves to shake everyone's hand, but thinks that "Peace be with you," is "Pleased to meet you." (You gotta admit, that does make more sense.) It is baffling, but adorable to watch her develop this interest of her own.
* (This one was posted on Facebook.)
On the way to Superbowl Village...
Taryn: Where are we going?
Lee: Somewhere fun!
Taryn: Church?
* Upon entering the completely quiet Oxford church for Ash Wednesday services. Taryn points up at the crucifix hanging above the altar. "Look mommy! It's Jesus!"
* After leaving the Oxford church...
Lauren: Did you like that church Taryn?
Taryn: Yes, that church special. That church special like my dress.
* I was eating a piece of peanut butter bread the other day. I ate all 4 corners first. Taryn gasped and pointed at it. "Look mommy, it's like Jesus." (It was in the shape of a cross.)
* The other day Taryn was unhappily going to bed. Lee was home momentarily from work, but she knew that he would be leaving.
Taryn: Mommy, I cry when daddy leaves. I gonna cry. Mommy, let's pray. Let's pray, then I not cry when daddy leaves.

Lent 2010
Today is Ash Wednesday. The season of Lent has begun.
Last night I set my phone reminder to not eat meat on Fridays.
And today... I'm giving up...
Non-Diet Pop
Yes. I know. I'm going easy on myself this year. Last year wasn't too hard either. I gave up MySpace. And I never really missed it! I was considering giving up pop all together, but I'm looking down the barrel of 10 weeks of student teaching with a baby that wakes up at 5:30am everyday (even weekends), so I don't think I can do it without caffeine!
However, I deserve a couple easy years since the two years before that were HARD.CORE. Giving up beer followed by giving up swearing. Just to recap how those went, the swearing went quite well. The church got a lot of money at the beginning of lent, but it tapered off really quickly. The beer... Was a travesty. I compensated with wine and hard alcohol, which I'm pretty sure is NOT in the spirit of lent. My liver was not pleased.
I think that Lee is giving up Sportscenter. I tried to throw Around the Horn in there too, but he was worried that if he didn't watch that show he wouldn't know what the guys on PTI were talking about. SIGH!
Oh, in other news, the icicle has hit SIX FEET!

Weekend Wrap Up
Well, it's Monday morning and I barely feel like I had a weekend. Isn't that the worst? No sleeping in whatsoever... BOO!
Saturday, Lee and I had our first birthing class. It went from 10am - 5pm with a 1/2 hour break for lunch. Seriously, is it a good idea to force a bunch of 8 month pregnant chicks to sit in uncomfortable chairs for THAT long? They really need to invest in some La-Z-Boys.
The nurses that taught the class were pretty entertaining though and there were videos to keep our attention. Although, some of the videos scared me a bit... I have SEEN a video of a birth before, but not since like 8th grade health class. It seemed much more distant and unrealistic then. I mean, I thought in the 15 years since then, maybe we would have figured out how to get the guys to carry the babies... Just kidding. Anyway, there were definitely some moments of "Um, yeah, my body is going to do WHAT?!?" We also got a tour of the hospital which I liked. I can now ENVISION where we need to go when the time comes, and that makes me feel much more prepared.
After birthing class, we went up to Merrillville for a Target run. We were going to go to BW3's to watch the Michigan St game, but it was PACKED! So, we took advantage of halftime and just drove home.
On Sunday, we got up early to head down to Lafayette for our nephew Austin's 2nd birthday. They made hotdogs on the grill and had Dog N Suds coney dog sauce to put on it... MMMMmm! There were also cupcakes & ice cream. Afterwards, we hung with my mom for awhile, then went up to Monticello to hang with Lee's parents for a bit, hit up Wal-Mart for some groceries and headed home. I never knew Wal-Mart groceries were so cheap! So much better than our actual grocery store. I'm sold.
Next weekend is going to be another busy one with day 2 of birthing class on Saturday followed by Easter on Sunday. (Woohoo for only one more Friday of Lent!)

Lent 2009 - Confession
Lee on the other hand... He hasn't been to confession since, like, um, 8th grade. I'm trying to convince him to go, but I'm not sure just one visit will be enough. I'm pretty sure he needs one hour with Monsignor just to cover high school!
As I type this, I have him going through a copy of the "Examination of Conscience". Going through there, I discovered things I didn't even know where sins! And Lee, the "cradle Catholic" is too!

Lent-fest 2009
*
So, Lent is right around the corner. Without double checking online, I believe it starts on Ash Wednesday which is February 25th this year. Being the mediocre Catholic that I am, I will be attempting to not eat meat on Fridays, giving up a vice or two, going to confession, etc.
* Two years ago I gave up beer. It was tough. And I ended up throwing up a lot from hard liquor... This, however, would be a cake walk this year since I have been beer-free since September 1st. (Oh how I miss you sweet nectar of life.)
* Last year I gave up swearing. The beginning was hard, but by the end, it really wasn't that bad. It made me notice how much other people swore...
This year:
I am giving up MySpace. Cold turkey. Cancelling my account and all. I don't do all that much with MySpace, but I do check my account. It is also a good way to stalk people, which I love doing. However, it will probably make me a bit more productive at work, and that's a goo thing.
I am also contemplating some way to cut back on my sweets intake. I blame the baby, but after every meal, I just want a little something sweet. Perhaps I should take the advice of the Biggest Loser and get some sugar-free gum or something. I'm not going to make a hard & fast NO SWEETS rule (because that would be cruel & unusual punishment to myself), but I am cutting back.
Lee:
Not sure what Lee is going to give up this year. I know that it will NOT be beer. He failed miserably at that last year. Way too many episodes of passing out before 10pm. I think it should be Craigslist. He is a total Craigslist addict! And he never actually buys anything. He just spends hours looking at the site.
What are you other Catholics out there doing for Lent this year?

Kevin Hart @ Lent Update
My dad loves comedy clubs. I reluctantly have been to a lot of comedy shows with him. My favorite was probably Darrel Hammond at Caroline's in New York City. I have a little bit of a fear of comedians. Basically, I am afraid that they will make fun of me. Well, my dad is one of those people that laughs hysterically at the comedian and says things back to them like "Yeah, I know, hahaha!" So, he totally asks for them to make fun of him. Then he laughs even more when they DO make fun of him. Too much stress for me.
Anyway, Kevin Hart was the comedian. He is really short and has been in quite a few comedies. You have probably seen him in a few movies without really knowing it. We actually saw him yesterday while we were watching 'Along Came Polly'. Anyway, he was good. My favorite part was probably when he talked about getting into an argument with his 3 year old daughter that can't really talk. I guess she said some gibberish and he was like "I KNOW THAT MEANS F*CK YOU, YOU MIDGET N-ER BASTARD." You kind of had to see it, but it was hilarious. And we were far enough from the stage that my dad couldn't get us made fun of by the comedians.

And a Lent update... As you can see in the top right corner, I am racking up the $ pretty quick. I went two days without swearing, mostly because Lee was out to sea and I didn't really have anyone to talk to. As soon as he came home, I ended up swearing like 7 times that night. This weekend, between the drinking and a political dispute we got into on Saturday night, I fell off a cliff. I am going to really focus this week, though. I hope to not add anymore to my count.
Some more exciting news in my life, we closed on our house this Friday. We will be going back to Indiana this weekend to move some stuff into the house. Basically, we have stuff scattered between my mom's house, Lee's parents' house and his brother's house. So, we are getting all of that moved up to the house this weekend. My mom will be VERY happy to have her closets back!!
Welcome back Mich & Reuter! Hope the cruise was great! Mich, I'll be happy to get back to our daily emails!! I've actually had to WORK this last week!

Lent 2008
Anyway, Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 6th, and ends Easter Sunday, March 23rd. I need to decide what I should give up, so I am starting a poll. Right now, my possibilities are:
- Swearing - I would put aside $1 to put in the needy basket at church for every time I swore.
- Red meat - No burgers, steak, pepperoni... Yum. I'm hungry.
- MySpace/Facebook - Phew! My work would probably love this one!
If anyone has any other ideas for me, please leave a comment.
